MAYA ARTS PROGRAM

The Mayan Art Program (MAP) saw huge success in 2007. 390 students  participated in art classes during the school year, an art therapy class was begun for women's circle focusing on photography, one school was radically transformed and five parent teachers associations were started.

MAP uses art education to reinforce the education systems in Guatemala, helping children to develop creative and critical thinking skills.   The program reflects ideas concerning gender equality, civic participation, environmental stewardship and Maya culture.

This Fall, Central Virginia Public Television aired a documentary about our collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University's Fashion department.  The program, produced by Nick Schapiro, followed the adventures of Professor Linda Lee and a group of students as they worked with the Association of Highland Women's business development program.  The fruit of the collaboration is the fashion forward clothing line named  Darla Luz
