New HSP YouTube Channel

Thanks to our board member Tony Bradley, HSP now has several videos about our work in Guatemala. We've posted them on our new YouTube Channel for all to see. You'll also find inspiring and educational videos from other sources that focus on indigenous issues and transformational development. Subscribe to the channel today so you can keep track of all the new videos as they get posted.

New Mayan Arts Progam Blog

Now you can easily follow the progress of our Mayan Arts Program (MAP) and all the many wonderful people who contribute to it. We've just started this blog, but soon you'll be able to find everything from updates about the playground we've just built in Xeabaj, to how college students in Virginia are teaching MAP projects to middle school children here through an exchange with Mayan kids in Guatemala.

Director's Blog Now Online

HSP's Executive Director, Ben Blevins, now has a blog of his own! Check it out for updates about our work in the Highlands and analysis of current issues Guatemala. His first post is all about the recent unrest in Guatemala City over allegations that President Colom was involved in the murder of a prominent lawyer and two of his clients.

Spring 2009

Daniel Matul in Virginia April 16-22!

Many of you who have served with us will remember Daniel Matul well, as the incredibly eloquent speaker on Mayan culture, heritage and belief system, Mayan Cosmovision. It is with great excitement and honor that we invite you all to any of the following events. Please help spread the word!

2012: Cosmovision, Creativity, & Transformation
An Evening with Daniel Matul
Internationally Esteemed Mayan Elder and Scholar

Find out what contemporary Mayan leaders are saying about 2012, the year that the Mayan millennial calendar seems to mysteriously end, with many predicting great, global change. Sr. Matul is a Mayan Elder renowned throughout the world for his scholarly work, advocacy and activism, empowered by the Mayan council of Elders, Maya International League and other indigenous NGO's to speak for the Mayan people.

Join him next week to gain indigenous insights on 2012 and learn more about Mayan Cosmovision overall. He'll also be speaking about how Mayan Cosmovision is interwoven with arts education in the Mayan Arts Program to improve the lives of hundreds of schoolchildren in rural Guatemalan communities.

Sr. Matul will be speaking in Spanish, with English translation, which makes this an excellent event for Spanish speakers, instructors and students.

These events are fundraisers for the Mayan Arts Program, a program of the Highland Support Project. For 17 years, HSP has been serving the Mayan people of Guatemala's Highlands through transformational programming, anchored by indigenous community leaders in Guatemala and supported by partnerships with North American individuals and organizations.

January 2009

Happy New Year and welcome to HSP 's new website! In the spirit of love and hope, we've been welcoming in 2009 with open hearts, big ideas, and rolled-up sleeves. Up here in North America, we're all emerging from a tough year and bracing ourselves for perhaps even tougher times.

Fortunately, we have the wonderful knowledge and experience that our partner Mayan communities in Guatemala have generously shared with us over the years to guide and inspire us. As your HSP staff, we're more dedicated than ever to ensuring that they continue to have the support they need, and that North Americans have increasing opportunities to learn and serve with them down in Guatemala.

The Highland Support Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Richmond, Virginia. HSP serves the Mayan communities of Guatemala through transformational development projects and offers service-learning trips to North Americans in our ongoing mission to foster meaningful exchange and understanding across the Americas.
