Join the Highland Support Project for a 8-day Indigenous Foodways Trip in Guatemala!
Spend one week with the Highland Support Project (HSP) in the Guatemalan Highlands partnering with a local indigenous-run organization for this unforgettable trip. Learn about foodways and food sovereignty while supporting community projects that improve indigenous women's and their families' quality of life, and build resilience in their communities against global pressures.
HSP's trips offer an authentic experience for participants through shared meals, community events and days spent working together on meaningful projects with an organization that has over 30 years of experience providing inter-cultural transformational trips
On this trip, you will:
Visit an organic coffee cooperative on the shores of volcano-studded Lake Atitlan, a national treasure and fascinating, living foodway.
Connect with remote Mayan communities, rarely experienced by tourists, to work with a local family and a mason to build smokeless stoves, transforming the family's health and living environment.
Experience the famous religious celebration, Day of the Dead, on November 1st, visiting a local cemetery.
Spend a night in AMA's community center, in the most remote and highest point of the Highlands, a unique experience, harvesting and hearing about the deep cultural significance of corn, taking a sunrise walk to a local viewpoint, and bathing in a medicinal Mayan sweat bath.
Participate in a ceremony led by a Mayan priest to experience Mayan spirituality and learn more about the four directions that underpin agricultural and cultural practices.
Visit AMA's agricultural development projects in rural communities.
Listen to lectures on Mayan culture and philosophy by prominent Mayan scholars. Learn about the ancient art of backstrap weaving through AMA's fairtrade textile enterprise. Take a cooking class preparing traditional Guatemalan dishes.
